Three weeks ago, I had the privilege of attending the innovative dental event, Dontorama, in London. This unique gathering is transforming the way the dental community comes together. Unlike traditional conferences where dentists often take the center stage, Dontorama takes a different approach.
During this event, dentists found themselves in the audience, observing three acts performed by actors who skillfully reconstructed daily scenarios and challenges dentists face with their patients. This revolutionary and educational format brings attention to crucial subjects that sometimes get overshadowed in typical dental gatherings.
While many conferences focus on showcasing new materials and machinery, they often overlook deeper discussions on dentist-patient communication—the heartbeat of our profession. Reflecting on my 23 years since dental school, it’s evident that not enough has been done to help young dentists build sufficient mental resilience.
The gap between dental school and real-life practice remains a challenge. Many young dentists express feeling unprepared for the differences between the two environments. Perhaps it’s time we follow Dentorama’s lead by incorporating more role-playing into dental education. By practicing challenging scenarios, students can develop the communication skills vital for success in the field.
One notable aspect of the younger generation is their self-awareness. They voice their opinions, challenging the status quo. As mentors and experienced professionals, we must listen and adapt. Failure to do so could lead to a crisis in the near future.
My mission is to support the dental community by sharing insights I wish someone had imparted to me. While kindness and hard work are crucial, they alone are not enough. “You can kill it with kindness, but if you don’t set boundaries, kindness will kill you.”
As we navigate the evolving landscape of dentistry, let’s embrace change, foster open communication, and equip the next generation with the tools they need for a resilient and fulfilling career.
I wish you a wonderful week 🦋
Take Care , Big hug
