The Elephant Between The Dentist and Dental Nurse

🙄🤔 Have you ever felt a non- verbal tension from your dental nurse because of running late with a patient?

Addressing tension in the dentist’s office is crucial for fostering a harmonious environment.

The phrase “the elephant in the room” vividly captures those uncomfortable topics left unaddressed, overshadowing relationships. In the unique dynamic between a dentist and their dental assistant, this metaphorical elephant manifests in various ways, subtly impacting the practice.

As a dentist, I intimately understand the significance of achieving a feeling of understanding and “flow”, where teamwork and mindset greatly impact patient care.

👩‍💻 In my experience coaching dentists, a recurring challenge emerges in the relationship between them and their dental assistants. Often, it’s expressed through non-verbal cues, facial expressions, and tension-laden silences that can impede workflow and compromise patient experience. After all, patients are not immune to the atmosphere; they keenly perceive any undercurrents while reclined in the dental chair

Moreover, consider the total amount of time spent together—hours upon hours, just the dentist and the dental assistant. The quality of each day is inevitably influenced by the rapport between them. While some may dismiss this as a minor issue, relegating it to the realm of “just get along; it’s a workplace,” there’s more at stake.

🤓 A Research, from Harvard, underscores the pivotal role of soft skills and interpersonal dynamics in job success. Surprisingly,  85% of success stems from soft skills and only 15% contributed by technical proficiency (hard skills). It begs the question: Why do educational institutions disproportionately focus on imparting hard skills, potentially setting up professionals for interpersonal pitfalls?

Hard skills are essential for performing tasks and duties related to a particular job or profession. On the other hand, soft skills, also known as interpersonal or people skills, are the personal attributes and qualities that enable individuals to effectively interact and communicate with others. These skills are less tangible and harder to quantify compared to hard skills. Soft skills include traits such as communication, teamwork, adaptability, problem-solving, leadership, empathy, and emotional intelligence. Soft skills are crucial for building relationships, resolving conflicts, collaborating effectively in teams, and navigating various social situations.

I can’t help to see this pattern:  Things we can’t measure, are the things we often forget in the educational programs. Even when we know that we need them six times more than the skills we can measure.

The Harvad Study was published already in 1918. 106 years ago!!!! So why do we still miss these soft skills in our Dental Schools and in other educational programs

😅 Drawing from my personal experience, I too have grappled with the fear of conflicts and the dread of creating negative energy in the workplace. However, I’ve learned a valuable lesson: delaying the inevitable only exacerbates the situation. It’s far better to address concerns openly and honestly, inviting the other person’s perspective. Demonstrating a genuine desire to resolve issues can pave the way for constructive dialogue and mutual understanding.

Yes, it’s undeniably difficult, but I can attest that delaying only amplifies the challenges. I urge you not to wait, as doing so will only inflate the metaphorical snowball of discontent. Instead, take the courageous step of initiating a conversation sooner rather than later. I promise you, it’s worth it.

Moreover, I’ve learned that it’s essential not to label actions as inherently right or wrong. I’ve seen instances where dentists mistreat their assistants, creating a toxic work environment. Instead, it’s about finding the best way for both partners to collaborate effectively, ensuring the well-being of everyone involved, including the patients who are sensitive to the atmosphere.

By fostering open communication, mutual understanding, and a supportive work culture, dental teams can achieve a state of harmony where everyone thrives. It’s about recognising the value each individual brings to the table and working together towards a common goal – providing exceptional care to patients.

In my coaching and speaking engagements, I’m passionate about empowering dental professionals to cultivate positive relationships and create environments conducive to success. Let’s work together to build dental teams that operate at their highest potential, delivering unparalleled care and experiences for our patients.
